IIT Madras has launched the world’s first online B.Sc. Degree program in Programming and Data Science. IIT Madras is located in Chennai, the capital of southernmost state Tamil Nadu and also the number one institute of our country in the field of engineering according to NIRF rankings launched by the Ministry of Education or previously known as MHRD.

The eligibility criteria set up by IIT-M allow only students for this degree who had passed subjects Mathematics and English in class 10th and those who have cleared class 12th or equivalent right now this year from any verified educational board or are currently enrolled / previously enrolled in any Bachelor's Degree program in campus mode or have completed any Bachelor’s Degree program in any mode either online or offline or completed diploma course from any registered educational institute on campus mode.
There are two types of entry i.e. regular entry and only diploma entry. Regular entry will allow students to join at first level out of three levels required to obtain a certified degree of B.Sc. whereas through diploma level, you will be able to complete diploma in Data Science or Computing and both. For regular entry, you will be required to give a qualifier exam which will screen students to qualify for this degree and be admitted in this program. Diploma entry hasn’t been opened and is expected to be open in late 2020 or starting of 2021. After qualifier exam, first batch for world’s first online B.Sc. degree program commences from January,2021.
There are three levels i.e. first Foundational level (8 courses comprising 32 credits), second Diploma level in Data Science (6 courses comprising 22 credits) and Programming (6 courses comprising 22 credits) and final level i.e. Degree level (11 courses comprising 40 credits) in IIT Madras Online Degree program and to get a B.Sc. Degree in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, a learner has to successfully complete all three levels.
There is also the flexibility to exit at any level. Depending on the courses completed, the learner can receive Foundational Certificate from Centre for Continuing Education, IIT Madras or Diploma in Data Science only or Programming only or both diplomas from IIT Madras. But to get a degree in B.Sc., every level is required to be completed with both diplomas necessary to reach at final level of degree level. There will be online assignments and quizzes at regular intervals for evaluation of students and 3 terms in each year and learners will be allowed to register for up to 4 courses per term based on previous term performance. Single level can be completed in 1-3 years according to the learner and hence, completion time for this degree ranges from 3-6 years which will be based on preferred pace & performance of learner.
Fees for different levels are different according to students desire to complete as much level as they want and submit fees accordingly. But to obtain a degree, one has to pay fees for all levels and pass each level with minimum required marks. There is a fees waiver for EWS, PWD, SC, ST category students.
