Politicians and their Educational Qualification
There is no clear indication on what is the minimum required qualification to be a politician. As a result in India there is a large number of politicians who are not qualified. However, there are also a large number of politicians who are very well educated. Given below is a list of both, educated and illiterate politicians
- Rabri Devi: She was married off at a very early age and has never had a formal education. She was dragged into politics by her husband Lalu Prasad Yadav after the allegations of the fodder scam were proved valid. She became the Chief Minister of Bihar and presently is the member of the Bihar legislative council.
- Jayalalitha: She is an actress who turned to politics. In her school she did really well and even won a scholarship for further studies. However, she decided to quit education and try her luck in the film industry.
- Karunanidhi: His educational journey ended with 10th standard. He is a gifted poet and has a beautiful flair of writing, but he never perused further education, and he too ventured into writing for films and used to write screenplays for Tamil movies.
- Vijaykant: He is another actor turned politician and couldn’t complete his education after 12th standard. He joined the TN assembly elections in 2011.
- Gulzar Singh Ranike: Cabinet Minister in Punjab, he is just an undergraduate. He resigned from his cabinet after his alleged involvement in the Border Area Development Scam. Later into the cabinet he was reintroduced.
There are at the same time several highly qualified politicians. Here is the list
- Manmohan Singh: Our former Prime Minister is extremely qualified, and has earned a number of degrees. He has got a D. Phil degree from Oxford University UK and has earned honours from Cambridge University.
- P Chidambaram: He was the Finance Minister and has completed his master’s in business administration from the Harvard University.
- Sushma Swaraj: She is the Union minister for external affairs has completed her bachelors in Arts with major in Sanskrit and Political Science from Haryana. She has also completed her LL.B degree from Punjab University.
- Mayawati: The leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati holds multiple degrees. She has completed her B.A from Delhi University and later completed her LL.B from Delhi University.
- Kapil Sibal: He served as the former Human Resource development minister did his masters in Arts from Delhi University. He holds an LL.M degree too from the Harvard Law School.
The list of highly educated politicians is longer than the uneducated ones. However, people belonging to both categories have managed to acquire power and serve term in office. It is difficult to say what one needs to make it into politics, education for sure is not the criteria.
